The Pros and Cons of a Used Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai is a world-renowned Korean manufacturer known for modern, stylish vehicles. Coincidentally, the name says it all. Hyundai in Korean translates to "modern."

Even Hyundai's used vehicles hold up well in the modern market. Many choose to go with a used Hyundai Ioniq 5 to save some money, yet still drive in style. Before buying a Hyundai, though, it's important to know what you're getting into.

Hyundai options like the Ioniq come with a wealth of upsides - but also a few noteworthy downsides. Keep reading for a quick guide on the pros and cons of the Hyundai Ioniq.

Pro: a Used Hyundai Ioniq 5 Is Very Affordable

There are four trim models in the Ioniq lineup:

  • SE Standard Range
  • SE
  • SEL
  • Limited

Even brand new, the ionic has a competitive price. New models at the base level start at $39,950.

That price drops all the way down to $23,777 for the used Limited edition. A used Tesla Model X, by way of comparison, could cost north of $50,000.

Hyundai options allow you to get an affordable EV for a fraction of the price. Whether you like the appeal of smart features or want to go green, you can do so on a budget.

Pro: Impressive Range

Range is often the make-or-break feature on any electric vehicle.

A high range facilitates longer journeys. The further you travel in an EV, the worse your charging anxiety gets. The US is in the midst of a charging network crisis, so it's important to have a vehicle that goes the distance.

The range will, of course, depend on which model you choose. The baseline SE Standard Range gets about 220 miles. If you buy the Limited trim, then that range balloons up to 303 miles.

A common concern when buying an electric vehicle is the battery life. After all, lithium-ion batteries have a lifespan of 1,500-2,000 cycles with EVs.

Ioniq features smart charging software that intelligently juices up your batteries. It keeps the battery in optimal condition throughout its lifespan. Though used, you have the assurance that your vehicle will work well.

Pro: Exceptional Charging

Battery capacity and range are one thing, but they mean little if the charging takes forever. Even at fast charging station, it can take a minimum of 30 minutes to charge the average EV to full. Faster charging helps you avoid spending too long at your local station.

The Ioniq 5 made huge strides by upgrading to E-GMP and the 800V architecture. In English, that means that it has some of the best charging speeds on the market. Higher voltage plus a lower current results in minimal energy-to-heat loss during a charging cycle, too.

In practical terms, this allows you to charge from 10 to 80% in as little as 18 minutes. You can maximize your at-home charging as well by purchasing a 350 kW fast charger.

Pro: Better Warranty

Most electric vehicles will have a 100,000-mile/eight-year battery warranty. For Hyundai, their warranty covers 100,000 miles/ten years - an extra two years over the competition.

This warranty also extends to the powertrain and essential electric propulsion components. Aside from the battery warranty, there's also an industry-leading 60,000-mile/five-year basic warranty.

The initial 10-year battery warranty, unfortunately, only applies to the original owner. It transitions to an eight-year warranty when sold. Luckily, though, you can transfer the basic warranty from owner to owner.

Pro: Innovative Features

The Ioniq, even when used, is an old dog with new tricks. If you purchase the Limited trim, for example, you get fully reclining front seats. This allows you to get in a quick nap while charging on the go.

There's also a nifty feature for vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging. This is helpful if you need to power camping equipment: portable grills, air mattress pumps, and light sources. It is, however, a Limited-trim-only feature that requires a $540 adapter.

In addition to this, every model comes with the same expected driver-assist features. Things like the following:

  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Reverse parking collision avoidance
  • Rear cross-traffic collision avoidance
  • Blindspot collision avoidance
  • Forward collision avoidance

There's no need to worry that the "used" tag will rob you of modern smart luxuries. You get everything you would expect from the competition by purchasing the Ioniq 5.

Pro: User Friendliness

One thing many new Ioniq drivers report is how easy Hyundai is to use. It can be scary stepping into an EV if you come from a lifetime of ICE vehicles. Most of them are fundamentally different in big ways.

Fortunately, Hyundai eases the learning curve for any driver. Controls are intuitive, easy to access, and clearly labeled. Drive-assist features engage automatically, and controlling everything from the center console screen works flawlessly.

Con: Missing Features in Base Models

Despite its low price point, the base model SE Standard Range does have a few missing features. While you do get the same safety implementations mentioned above, it lacks some finer details.

For example, there are no rear climate control vents. Backseat passengers will have to rely on front-seat vents for cooling and heating.

Other things are more premium features that he wouldn't expect in any baseline vehicle model anyway. Things like wireless phone charging ports, automated windows, and forward-facing parking distance indicators.

Granted, these are small luxuries that most people can live without. Shelling out a few extra grand for the Limited trim ensures you get them if you so wish.

Con: Availability May Be Limited

Being such a good value proposition, it can sometimes be challenging to find an Ioniq in the first place. They sell out like hotcakes for reasons we've discussed!

In some cases, this could mean that you pay an above-average MSRP due to market demand. Allocation slots at some dealerships may charge added market adjustments. Keep an eye on Kelly Blue Book and other resources for correct pricing.
